Frequently asked questions.

Do I need experience to join?

Not at all! We welcome players of all skill levels, from complete beginners to seasoned athletes. Our coaches and teammates will help you learn the game and build your confidence on the pitch.

What gear do I need to start?

For your first practices, all you need are athletic clothes, cleats (if you have them), and a good attitude. As you progress, you’ll want a mouthguard and eventually some Sarasota Rugby Club apparel, which we’ll help you get.

When and where are practices held?

We train twice a week, typically Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:30 PM, hosted at 2926 Wilkinson Rd, Sarasota, FL 34231. Check our events page for the most up-to-date schedule.

Can I just come watch before joining?

Absolutely! We encourage you to come check out a practice or game, meet the team, and get a feel for the Sarasota Rugby Club family. Bring a friend, hang out, and see if rugby is right for you.

How else can I get involved if I don’t want to play?

We love supporters, parents, and volunteers just as much as players. From helping on game days to cheering from the sidelines or sponsoring the club, there are plenty of ways to be part of Sarasota Rugby Club without stepping onto the field.

How do I officially join the club?

It’s simple: show up to a practice, meet the team, and fill out our sign-up form. Once you’ve done that, you’ll be part of the Sarasota Rugby Club family. We’ll guide you through everything else, gear, registration, player fees and game day details.

What makes rugby different from football or soccer?

Rugby blends the strategy of football with the nonstop action of soccer. Everyone runs, passes, and tackles, so every player is always involved. It’s fast, fun, and keeps you engaged the entire game.

How can I support the club if I don’t play?

You can sponsor, donate, volunteer, or simply show up to cheer at matches. Fans and supporters are the heartbeat of Sarasota Rugby Club, we need you as much as we need players.

Do you have social events?

Yes! Rugby is known for its off-the-field culture. From post-match socials to community events, Sarasota Rugby Club is as much about friendships and good times as it is about the game.

What’s the time commitment?

We train twice a week and usually play matches on Saturdays during the season. But the commitment is flexible, you can balance rugby with work, school, and family life.

Why should I choose rugby over other sports?

Rugby builds strength, confidence, and teamwork in a unique way. It’s inclusive, exciting, and creates lifelong friendships. Once you experience rugby, most people say they’ve never felt a community like it. It truly is like a second family

How much does it cost to join?

We work hard to keep rugby affordable and accessible. Player dues cover field rentals, equipment, referees, and league fees, but we keep costs low thanks to sponsors and fundraising. If money’s a concern, talk to us no one is ever turned away for financial reasons.

Is rugby safe?

Yes. Rugby is a contact sport, but safety is our top priority. Practices focus on proper technique, controlled tackling, and player welfare. Certified coaches ensure everyone learns the game the right way. Plus, there are playing options for every comfort level, from touch rugby to full contact.

Do you have youth programs?

Yes! Our youth rugby welcomes kids and teens of all ages. It’s a fun, supportive environment where they’ll learn teamwork, confidence, and discipline, all while staying active. Parents love that rugby builds both character and fitness in one go.

What kind of fitness do I need?

Any! Rugby has a place for every body type and fitness level. Some players are fast runners, others are powerful in contact, and many are still building fitness as they play. Joining rugby will get you in shape, you don’t need to be in shape before you start.

Do women play too?

Yes! Rugby is one of the most inclusive sports in the world. Sarasota Rugby Club supports and welcomes female players at every level. Whether you want to learn, train, or compete in tournaments, there’s a place for you here.

What age groups can join?

We welcome players from kids to adults. Youth programs start at age 6+, and our senior teams include college students, professionals, and parents alike. Rugby truly is a lifetime sport.

How competitive is Sarasota Rugby Club?

We balance competition with community. Some players come to push themselves and compete hard, others join for fitness and fun. No matter your goals, you’ll find your place here.

What if I’ve never played a team sport before?

No problem! Rugby is one of the easiest team sports to pick up because everyone has a role. Even if you’ve never played a team game, we’ll teach you step by step—and you’ll have instant teammates supporting you.

Do you travel for games?

Yes, but mostly within Florida. We play against other clubs around the state, giving players the chance to experience competition and camaraderie beyond Sarasota, without overwhelming travel. At the end of the season there is a opportunity to travel to National based on club performance through the regular season.

Can parents get involved too?

Definitely! Parents often help with youth rugby, support players on game days, and join our social events. Many parents even decide to play themselves—rugby is for the whole family.
